Marie Marquardt is a Scholar-in-Residence at Emory University’s Candler School of Theology. Her first novel for young adults, Dream Things True (Macmillan/St. Martin’s Griffin, September 2015) draws on almost two decades of experience working with immigrant families as a scholar, advocate, and service provider. She has published non-fiction books and scholarly articles on religion, inter-ethnic relations, and civic participation of Latin American immigrants in the U.S. South. She is a founding organizer and co-chair of El Refugio, which serves immigrants detained at the Stewart Detention Center and their families. Marie lives in Decatur, Georgia with her husband, Chris, their four children, a dog, and a bearded dragon.

Shirley Anne Cruz, participant in the GALEO Institute for Leadership Class of 2015

Shirley Anne Cruz was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She moved to Georgia in 2000 and after graduating from East Coweta High School, Shirley Anne pursued a college education Georgia State University. She graduated in 2008 with Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism with a concentration in Public Relations and a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology with a concentration in Family and Children. In 2012, she then graduated with her Master’s in Public Administration from Nova Southeastern University.  While a student at Georgia State University, Cruz became a program manager with the Girl Scouts of Pine Valley Council where she oversaw the Hispanic Initiative grant program sponsored by the Goizueta Foundation. Cruz went on to serve in a variety of roles including Hispanic Engagement Membership Specialist, Guest Services Specialist, Recruitment and Placement Coordinator and Manager of Volunteer Support, Recognitions and Resolutions.  Cruz joined LaAmistad in December of 2014 as Assistant Director. In this role, Cruz works to establish effective community partnerships between local schools, churches, and local public and private business to identify and establish new after school locations that can be sustained long-term. As a certified volunteer administrator and community activist, Cruz believes her personal mission is to create a platform where she can advocate for comprehensive human rights and social services.
