Call for our Democratic Congressional Members!

From FWD.us:

I need you all to reach out to every house democrat and ask them to please vote NO on any must pass vehicle/ CR/ caps deal that comes down from the Senate that does also not provide protections for dreamers, or without also passing a dream act now.

Congressman Hank Johnson: (202) 225-1605

Congressman John Lewis: (202) 225-3801

Congressman Sanford Bishop: (202) 225-3631

Congressman David Scott: (202) 225-2939

What you need to know: Yesterday, The House passed a CR that included funding for community health centers and 1 year of defense funding. What we expect to happen is for McConnell to alter the CR, keep funding for community health centers and add in a budget caps deal (that was reached with Schumer).

Why are we doing this? The budget caps deal was the Democrats leverage to ensuring a vote/passing perm protections for dreamers. BC right now, Ryan could lose 80-100 votes in the house over this. Fiscal hawks tend to vote against caps deals that raise both defense and domestic program spending dollar for dollar. While we do not have the specifics yet, we want to ensure that Democrats hold the line and do not vote for this.

Georgia should pass Hate Crimes Legislation to protect communities and make #HateFreeGA !

ACTION ALERT

We’re excited about the possibility of seeing real progress on passing hate crime legislation in Georgia this year, but we need your help now!

Will you take 3 minutes today to make 3 phone calls? Three important Committee Chairs need to hear from you today on why we need a hearing on hate crimes as soon as possible.

Call now:

Chairman Wendell Willard, House Judiciary Committee, 404.656.5125, wendell.willard@house.ga.gov

Chairman Rich Golick, House Non-Civil Judiciary Committee, 404.656.5943, rich.golick@house.ga.gov

Chairman Jesse Stone, Senate Judiciary Committee, 404.463.1314, jesse.stone@senate.ga.gov

When you call, you’ll likely speak to an administrative assistant. Politely tell them you’re calling to urge Chairman __(last name)__ to hold a hearing on hate crimes legislation. Here are some additional talking points:

The message: Please support a hearing on hate crime legislation.
– Georgia is one of just five states in the nation that does not protect its citizens against hate crimes. The time for Georgia to rectify this is now.
– Hate crime laws protect all of us. Hate crime laws don’t speak in terms of African American, Jewish or Gay. The bill covers the following categories: race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, mental disability and physical disability.
– Hate crime laws punish criminal conduct and not speech. Therefore, a person cannot be convicted of a hate crime without committing an underlying crime such as assault or arson.

Make your calls now!

#AdiosAmazon English Only Constitutional Amendment is up for debate in the GA Senate!

ACTION ALERT

English-only Constitutional Amendment would likely be unconstitutional and conflict with federal law.  However, it will also send a negative message that Georgia is an unwelcoming state for foreigners.  It would likely catch the attention as Atlanta attempts to attract Amazon’s HQ2.  We call the legislation #AdiosAmazon because we do feel that it would harm Georgia’s future efforts for attracting ongoing economic development.  Please call your Senator to oppose this legislation.

To find out who your Georgia State Senator is, please follow this link:
