U.S. Commission on Civil Rights
Georgia State Advisory Committee

Dear friends:

I am writing to spread the word about an exciting opportunity for residents of Georgia to join their respective State Advisory Committees (SACs) to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. The Commission maintains 51 SACs, one for each state and the District of Columbia. Each is composed of citizen volunteers familiar with local and state civil rights issues. SAC members assist the Commission with its fact-finding, investigative, and information dissemination functions. Recent issues examined by SACs include the impact of state immigration laws, solitary confinement, felony disenfranchisement, bullying, and equal educational opportunity.

The Commission seeks to ensure that advisory committees represent a variety of backgrounds, skills, experiences, and political ideologies to promote vigorous debate and full exploration of the issues. Previous SACs have included professors, social scientists, attorneys, community advocates, clergy, and small business owners.

Letters of interest should be received by October 12, 2015. If you or somebody you know are interested in joining a SAC in one of these states, please send a letter of interest to the following individuals:

Georgia Advisory Committee: U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, Southern Regional Office, 61 Forsyth Street, Suite 16T126, Atlanta, GA 30303. Letter can also be sent via email to jhinton@usccr.gov.

More information is available at https://www.federalregister.gov/articles/2015/08/14/2015-20042/requests-for-nominations-georgia-north-dakota-and-delaware-advisory-committees. Please contact my Special Assistant, Jason Lagria, at jlagria@usccr.gov if you have any questions.

Additional Background

SACs are statutorily mandated federal advisory committees of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights pursuant to 42 U.S.C. 1975a. Under the charter for the SACs, the purpose is to provide advice and recommendations to the Commission on a broad range of civil rights matters in its respective state that pertain to alleged deprivations of voting rights or discrimination or denials of equal protection of the laws because of race, color, religion, sex, age, disability, or national origin, or the administration of justice. SACs also provide assistance to the Commission in its statutory obligation to serve as a national clearinghouse for civil rights information.

The SAC consists of not more than 19 members, each of whom will serve a two-year term. Members serve as unpaid Special Government Employees who are reimbursed for travel and expenses. To be eligible to be on a SAC, applicants must be residents of their respective state and have demonstrated expertise or interest in civil rights issues.
The Commission is an independent, bipartisan agency established by Congress in 1957 to focus on matters of race, color, religion, sex, age, disability, or national origin. Its mandate is to:
Investigate complaints from citizens that their voting rights are being deprived,
Study and collect information about discrimination or denials of equal protection under the law,
Appraise federal civil rights laws and policies,
Serve as a national clearinghouse on discrimination laws,
Submit reports and findings and recommendations to the President and the Congress, and
Issue public service announcements to discourage discrimination.
