(Atlanta, GA) At a regularly scheduled meeting in Gainesville today, the Hall County Board of Elections and Voter Registration moved towards greater access for voting by voluntarily approving bilingual (English/Spanish) information and materials for elections.
The motion was made by Gala Sheats (D), supported by Kim Copeland (D) and passed 2-1. Ken Cochran (R) was the dissenting vote.
Jerry Gonzalez, Executive Director of GALEO, released this statement:
“GALEO applauds Hall County Board of Elections and Voter Registration for taking this important step forward to ensure all voters in Hall County would be able to exercise their right to vote, regardless of language barriers that existed before. GALEO will gladly work with Hall County to implement processes that will benefit the growing Latino electorate and ensure Spanish language access for voting is done in a thoughtful and efficient manner for the voters and for the county.
We want to thank the leadership of the Hall County Board of Elections and Voter Registration for taking the first step in this process. With the implementation of bilingual voting materials, the Latino electorate will become more engaged.”
