Non-Profit Civic Engagement Organizations Conduct Weekend of Action in Last Push for Voter Registration
Civic engagement groups to register voters in final push before October 6 registration deadline.
ATLANTA — Non-profit civic engagement groups will be registering voters around the state during the final weekend of voter registration before the deadline on Monday, October 6.
With events planned this weekend in the Metro Atlanta area and throughout the state, groups will register voters for the upcoming election on November 4, 2014. It is also an opportunity for groups to highlight the early voting options in each county, some that include Saturday and Sunday hours in addition to the standard one Saturday.
GLV_COLOR “The Latino vote continues to grow every day. Our efforts make sure that all eligible Latinos who want to exercise their right to vote this election cycle will do so. Latinos can be a deciding margin in these elections, but first we must register, then turn out to vote,” said Jerry Gonzalez, Executive Director of GALEO.
Eligible voters are also being encouraged to register online at www.GALEO.org if they have a Georgia driver’s license or a Georgia ID.
“It is critical that Georgians have access to the polls and registering to vote is the first step in that process. Once registered, voters must make voting a priority,” said Tamieka Atkins, Atlanta Chapter Director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance.
Following the October 6 registration deadline, groups will turn their focus to getting voters out to the polls, a critical step that almost 1.2 million Georgians do not make each election. Many of those who remain at home cite lack of impact as a reason not to vote. Civic engagement groups are reminding all voters that voting gives them an opportunity to make a difference concerning the issues impacting their community.
“Mid-term elections are critical. These are the elections that determine your local officials, the individuals who can make changes around laws that impact your life daily. From local transit in places like Clayton County to the Family Care Act to workplace discrimination, all of these are local and state decisions. So we must vote locally!” said Deborah Scott, Executive Director of GeorgiaStrategic Alliance for New Directions and Unified Policies (GeorgiaSTAND-UP).
But voting on Election Day can be hard for some voters. Work, school and life make access to the polls more difficult for some. For those voters, civic engagement groups are highlighting the Early Voting options in counties around the state, some with Saturday and Sunday hours.
“Early voting options allows young people to go to the polls at a time that fits their schedule. More options makes voting more accessible for everyone. Students, working adults and parents all need flexibility to get the polls. Early voting benefits everyone by making sure no one is left out,” said Em Elliott, Field Organizer for Georgia Equality.
This year, we want to make sure every eligible Georgia voter votes, and that every vote cast is counted.
