Act now to protect Georgians Health Care!
Governor Kemp has announced two healthcare plans that could harm Georgia families and consumers, putting their health and finances at risk. Multiple thousands of Georgians will remain uninsured with no way to access needed healthcare, while others will find that they unknowingly enrolled in a plan that doesn’t cover necessary health services. Now is the time for you to stand up and tell state leaders what you think. The public comment period will close on Tuesday, December 3, 2019. Submitting a public comment is the most important action Georgians can take. Speak up today! Join students and community members at the Nursing Building Room 115 of University of West Georgia for a community and campus discussion about the 2019 Rate Case, in which Georgia Power has requested to the Georgia Public Service Commission (GAPSC) hike customer’s electricity bills. The company wants to increase electricity rates by nearly doubling the hidden mandatory fee on your electric bill so you’ll owe at least $300 per year before even turning your lights on. Georgia Power is also seeking $500 million in additional rate hikes to have its customers pay for their inadequate plan to clean up their millions of tons of toxic coal ash. The company’s massive toxic coal ash problem has caused the contamination of our water in 11 of the 12 coal sites across our state. 8. Housing Justice League’s new Eviction Defense Manual just went live! Fulton County renters are facing a unconscionable eviction crisis with close to 800 evictions filed every week. Eviction has catastrophic effects on individuals and communities, trapping them in cycles of debt, dangerous living conditions, and further displacement. Meanwhile, eviction is used by corporate landlords as a way to further enrich themselves through fees and fines charged to very low-income Black and Brown communities. Housing Justice League will be mass printing the Manual to support Fulton County renters in fighting eviction as is accepting donations to cover costs.
