JOB DESCRIPTION: Communications Manager

Summary

ProGeorgia is seeking a talented individual with an interest in progressive social change, and with a track record of success managing communications and social media programs, to lead our collective communications strategy. The Communications Manager will develop and oversee overall communications platform, and specific messaging campaigns for ProGeorgia, and will provide communications guidance and support to ProGeorgia partner organizations. The Communications Manager position will report to the ProGeorgia Deputy Director.

ProGeorgia is a statewide network committed to the goal of ensuring that every Georgian is able to fully participate in our democracy. ProGeorgia is a new model for coordination among nonpartisan 501(c)3 organizations that have civic engagement as a core part of their mission. ProGeorgia is a permanent collective impact initiative focused on solving real problems for real people in Georgia, and bringing greater equity to our state. Through common sense collaboration and increasing political engagement, we work to create measurable positive change in our state. We work collectively to achieve shared goals, increase effectiveness, reduce duplication, and embrace a new way of doing our work that will result in greater impact. We are a member of the national State Voices network now active in over 22 states across the country.   Location: Atlanta, Georgia

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the ProGeorgia Executive Director and Deputy Director, State Voices Communications Manager, and ProGeorgia work groups to develop and implement the overall table communications strategy and specific messaging campaigns to expand and mobilize the Georgia electorate.
  • Assist organizational partners in developing strategic communications plans that encourage year-round engagement of members and constituents through traditional and social media. Support member organizations through the development of communications plans, providing technical assistance, messaging guidance and responding to partner requests.
  • Provide strategic messaging and communications guidance and support to the Table’s workgroups, specifically highlighting opportunities for expanding outreach and impact through traditional and social media.
  • Create and/or provide trainings for member organizations on various communications elements as needed.
  • Organize and implement earned media events.
  • Work with State Voices State Communications Manager to ensure alignment between state and national messaging and communications activities.

Key Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have fluid communications skills – both written and oral, experience designing and implementing social media and mobile campaigns, an understanding of the 501(c)(3) communications environment at the state level, and hands on experience in developing and executing communications strategies.

  • 2+ years experience in communications, working with both traditional and social media preferred.
  • Experience working with underrepresented and/or diverse communities.
  • Experience facilitating communications efforts within a coalition preferred.
  • Experience working with multiple groups to draft and distribute press releases and planning multi-organization press conferences and press events.
  • Experience writing blog posts, op-eds, and letters to the editor.
  • Connections with state and local press preferred.
  • Proficiency in current and emerging social media platforms and tools including: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Hoot Suite, Tumblr, BuzzFeed, etc. is required.
  • Provide support to build the communications capacity of each member organization.
  • Ability to manage several tasks/projects concurrently and prioritize work effectively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, work well under pressure, be detail oriented and meet deadlines.
  • Diplomatic, professional approach to problem solving and the ability to think independently and creatively.
  • Excellent organizational, time-management, oral and written communications skills.
  • Must exercise good judgment and discretion and be able to work independently and as a member of a group.
  • Must be a self-starter; willing to work sometimes long, irregular hours and to travel as needed.
  • Understanding of progressive issues, coalitions and non-profit structures required.
