The Southern Poverty Law Center launched its Southeast Immigrant Freedom Initiative in March of 2017, in collaboration with American Immigration Lawyers Association, the American Immigration Council, the Innovation Law Lab, and the American Immigration Representation Project. This project aims to provide pro-bono representation to immigrants detained in detention centers in the Southeast. The SPLC has a long history of fighting to protect the civil rights of vulnerable populations in the southeast and we are excited to drastically increase representation in the southeast, where nearly all detained immigrants currently lack representation.
However, we need your help. We are looking for bilingual volunteers to help facilitate communication between our volunteer attorneys and immigrant detainees. We will be communicating with our clients on a daily basis and need all the help we can get. We are primarily looking for Spanish speaking volunteers, but welcome other language capacities because there are detainees with other language needs.
We have launched the project in our first site, Stewart Detention Center which is located in Lumpkin, GA. We may be able to provide housing for most volunteers, but transportation and food would have to be provided by volunteer. We are looking for volunteers available as early as the week of April 24, any day during the week, Mon-Fri, from about 8AM to 5PM. Please email sifi@splcenter.org if you are interested with your contact information and availability, or to ask additional questions.
