Jerry Gonzalez, Executive Director of GALEO,  selected to be part of the Rockwood Leadership Institute 2017-2018 National Leading from the Inside Out (LIO) Yearlong Fellows

(ATLANTA, GEORGIA) November 10, 2017 -Rockwood is proud to announce our 2017-2018 National Leading from the Inside Out (LIO) Yearlong Fellows.
Each year, Rockwood selects a cohort of nationally-recognized leaders to participate in our transformative LIO Yearlong fellowship. Since 2003, this executive leadership program has emerged as one of the nation’s leading learning laboratories for experienced social change leaders.
National LIO Yearlong fellows must be nominated in order to apply for the fellowship, and the extensive selection process takes into account a great number of factors, including Rockwood’s commitment to building connections between leaders who are diverse in methodology, issue focus, geography, and personal experience and identity.

GALEO Announces the 11th Annual Cesar Chavez Essay Contest

 

Atlanta, Georgia – November 3, 2017 – The GALEO Leadership Council has announced details for the 11th Annual Cesar Chavez Essay Contest. The intention of the contest is to increase awareness of the continual plight of farm workers and their contributions to America while honoring civil rights legend Cesar Chavez.

Chavez’s leadership was critical to organizing farm workers and founding what is today known as the United Farm Workers union. Chavez remains one of the foremost Latino leaders in American history. His birthday is recognized as a state holiday in California, Colorado and Texas, and GALEO supports the movement to create a national holiday in honor of Chavez.

October 4, 2017 (Atlanta, GA)– LatinoJustice PRLDEF and the Georgia Association a Latino Elected Officials (GALEO), sent follow up joint Recommendation Letters and a formal Request to Meet as a follow up to their joint Notice Letters and Georgia Open Records Act Requests sent on July 18, 2017 to the Gwinnett County Board of Elections and all municipalities within Gwinnett County, to remind all municipalities within Gwinnett County to adhere to the mandates required under Section 203 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA), which require the County and every municipality within the County to provide Spanish language election information, materials and assistance.

I am the son of Latino immigrants, whose footsteps crossed the deserts of Mexico, whose sweat, blood and teardrops stained the path that crossed 3 countries and 4 states as they escaped a country torn by civil war. My parents are from El Salvador, the smallest country in Central America. In the 1970s they both ran away from the one place they called home in hopes of a better life in America. I was born in California, but I might as well have been raised in El Salvador. I remember growing up not being allowed to watch TV, but helping my dad work and living off whatever we could afford. $2.50 an hour, that’s what my parents earned because they did not have “papers.” From a young age, I learned that we had to help one another (no matter what age) so that we can eat and have a place to sleep in.
