(Atlanta, GA) Three anti-immigrant bills on GALEO’s legislative agenda advanced in their respective chamber by the crossover deadline. Senate Bill 6 and Senate Resolution 675 passed out of the Georgia Senate on February 29th and House Bill 781 passed out of the Georgia House on February 26th.

Jerry Gonzalez, Executive Director of GALEO, said, “The anti-immigrant legislative package which has moved forward will paint Georgia as an unwelcoming state, which shuns foreigners. This is not good for Georgia’s economic development efforts at all.”

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, the Hispanic National Bar Association (HNBA) expressed its deep concerns over the withdrawal of support for Judge Dax Lopez of Georgia by United States Senator David Perdue, whose early support was key in encouraging President Obama to nominate a rare Republican to a lifetime federal judgeship. Senator Perdue’s withdrawal of support for Judge Lopez appears to be because of Lopez’s service with the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials.

On Monday, Jan. 18, Georgia’s first-term U.S. senator, David Perdue, issued a brief statement honoring Martin Luther King Jr., whose “actions to advance justice continue to inspire us all to do better.” Two days later, Perdue stood in the way of justice and betrayed King’s ideals.

Perdue scuttled the U.S. District Court nomination of a fellow Republican, Dax Lopez, because of concerns about “his longstanding participation in a controversial organization.”
