DEADLINE TO ORDER TAMALES IS TODAY, MONDAY, DECEMBER 8, 2014!

We hope you will make every effort to join us on Monday, December 15th to join us for GALEO’s Holiday Social “Tamales for Justice”. We will be raising funds specifically for the Latino Voter Defense Fund. This effort is to eliminate the at-large voting system in the City of Gainesville and/or in the City of Dalton because we believe it is not in compliance with the Voting Rights Act; and, the system dilutes the Latino community’s ability to elect candidates of choice.

GALEO Urges for a a True Solution on Immigration Rather Than a Symbolic Vote

#PassABill that provides a solution, not a symbolic gesture
December 4, 2014 [Atlanta, GA]- After 524 days of failing to take up any attempt at meaningful immigration reform in the House, Republicans have announced that in response to President Obama’s executive action on immigration, they’ll be voting today to undo the action. While the vote is largely symbolic as it would not pass in the U.S. Senate, it’s a gesture that Republicans see as a way to express their anger at the President for taking steps within his authority to fix the immigration system on his own.

C. Munoz: #ImmigrationAction great step forward; More work needed for comprehensive reform

By:  Crystal Munoz, GALEO Intern-Fall 2014

December 3, 2014

There are currently 11 million undocumented peoples living in the United States1. The Executive Action announced by President Obama stands to help around 5 million undocumented persons from being deported and ripped away from their families2. Five million people, less than half, are safe from deportation, able to work, and live out of the shadows. But what about the 6 million people still hoping and praying for their chance at a life free of worry and with liberty.

U.S. Commission on Civil Rights Commends President Obama on Issuance of Immigration Accountability Executive Action

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights by majority vote commends President Obama on his issuance of the Immigration Accountability Executive Action, which focuses on repairing some of the fundamental flaws in our current immigration system.

The Commission stated, “We understand the outlined actions are not comprehensive, and in order to fully modernize our system of immigration, Congress will need to act. Nevertheless, the actions taken by the President today allow immigrants to come out of the shadows, expand DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) to protect more DREAMers (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors), allow families to remain together as they forge ahead toward the American Dream, and protect victims of human trafficking.

Put Away the Driver Distractions and Arrive Safely this Holiday Season

The holiday season is right around the corner and thousands of people in Georgia will hit the road to spend time with loved ones. Unfortunately, many of these drivers will be distracted from the task at hand: driving.

Distracted driving is a growing safety risk and a major cause of automobile crashes. Ask almost anyone who operates a vehicle, and they will tell you they’ve seen fellow motorists texting behind the wheel; and chances are they have done it themselves. In fact, at any given daylight moment across America, approximately 660,000 drivers are using cell phones or electronic devices while driving, according to a 2011 National Occupant Protection Use Survey (NOPUS). Drivers who use cellular phones while driving are four times more likely to have a crash than those who refrain from this risky behavior.
